The mausoleum was inaugurated on August 29, 1975. The mausoleum consists of 3 layers with a height of 21.6 meters, the lower layer forms a three-level staircase, the middle layer is the central structure of the mausoleum including the mortuary and corridors, stairs up and down. Around the four sides are rows of square columns made of granite, the top layer is a three-tiered mausoleum. On the main side is the inscription: “Chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh” with ripe plum-colored pink stone. The mausoleum was built in the style of real-socialist architecture, taking the original of Lenin's Mausoleum.

The mausoleum was built on the old foundation of the auditorium in the middle of Ba Dinh Square, where President Ho Chi Minh presided over large rallies and read the Declaration of Independence that gave birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. After the death of President Ho Chi Minh, the state officially started construction of the mausoleum on September 2, 1973.
