Dragon Boat Festival is a common festival of a number of countries influenced by Chinese culture. However, in Vietnam, Doan Ngo Festival also has different meanings.

Every year, on the 5th day of the 5th month (lunar calendar), our people celebrate the Doan Ngo Festival. Doan Ngo Tet is also known as Doan Duong Tet.

Doan Ngo means starting at noon (Doan: opening, Ngo: midday) and Duong means the sun, positive energy, Doan Duong means starting when the positive energy is strong.

This is a traditional New Year based on Eastern folk culture and beliefs to mark a new period opening for good things, praying for good harvests and a favorable livelihood. During the Doan Ngo Festival, people often have different customs such as: The custom of extracting insects, The custom of dyeing toenails - fingernails, The custom of bathing in coriander leaf water, The custom of examining trees to get fruit, The custom of picking medicine at Horse hour...

In each different country, the customs and rituals for Doan Ngo Festival are different. In East Asia, in Vietnam, Korea and China, this Tet holiday is preserved and respectfully kept.

In Vietnam, Doan Ngo Festival is "Vietnameseized" into a New Year to kill insects and worship ancestors. Vietnamese people also call Tet Doan Ngo "Tet to kill insects" because during the changing seasons, epidemics easily arise. On this day, people have many customs to eliminate insects and prevent diseases.

Currently, some Vietnamese villages still maintain the old customs and attach great importance to this Tet holiday. After the Lunar New Year, perhaps the "Insect-Killing Tet" is the warmest reunion Tet and has many customs associated with people's lives... so even though children and grandchildren work far away, they still try to collect Arrange to return.

At this time, fruits and flowers begin to bear fruit, hoping for a good harvest, so fruit is an indispensable offering. There are also other dishes depending on local customs.
