The name Ba Dinh

Ba Dinh Square was originally a western gate of Thang Long Citadel, a busy trading place with many craft villages. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Square was built by the French and named after a French priest named Puginier (Rond Point Puginier).

Ba Dinh Square is also known by two other names: Hong Bang Square and Independence Square. After the national resistance war, the French recaptured it and named it Hong Bang Square. Regarding the takeover of the capital, the Hanoi Administrative Committee proposed to take the old name of Independence Square, but Uncle Ho "uncle" left. The speaker kept the same name as Ba Dinh Square.

The name of Ba Dinh Square was given by Dr. Tran Van Lai. He held the position of City Mayor from July 20 to August 19, 1945. The reason why Mayor Tran Van Lai named it Ba Dinh Square is because he admires the insurgent Dinh Cong Trang who fought against the French very bravely at Ba Dinh base, Nga Son district, Thanh Hoa in the late 19th century. .

Ba Dinh is the name of a cluster of 6 islands, in the early 19th century they were 4 villages of 3 communes in 2 cantons, located in the middle of a year-round flooded swamp, in Nga Son district in the northeast of Thanh Hoa province. From the end of November and the beginning of December 1886 to the morning of January 21, 1887, there was a battle between the army of the court of Ham Nghi Thien Do against the French and the invading army of the French colonialists and their henchmen. The enemy had concentrated on Ba Dinh an unprecedentedly large army, compared with all their campaigns in Dai Nam country under the Third French Republic.

After many ups and downs of history, that square is still called Ba Dinh as it is now!

Uncle Ho on Independence Day

Under the leadership of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, on August 19, 1945, the August Revolution was successful, our country was liberated, the Vietnamese people were freed. The status of a slave rose to become the master of the country. To prepare for the Independence Day, there were many places to choose to hold the event and finally Ba Dinh Square was selected.

Thus, just over a month after the name "Ba Dinh Square", along with the new opportunity of the country, the world news media simultaneously reported: September 2, 1945, at In Ba Dinh Square, President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence, giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The image of the beloved Uncle Ho with khaki clothes, rubber sandals - all very simple and close. Around Uncle Ho were tens of thousands of compatriots clapping and cheering… all of which had been engraved in the history of the Vietnamese nation on that great National Day in 1945!

When talking about why President Ho Chi Minh chose Ba Dinh Square, historian Duong Trung Quoc said: Uncle Ho chose Ba Dinh Square to read the Declaration of Independence because Uncle Ho wanted a message not only with The Vietnamese people but also the whole world, as Uncle Ho affirmed:   The right of national independence of the Vietnamese people is regained by the Vietnamese people and it is in accordance with the principles of humanity.

Ba Dinh Square

77 years have passed, the image of dear Uncle Ho standing at Ba Dinh Square still creates an inexhaustible emotion for every Vietnamese. Especially, for the children of the South, when coming to Hanoi, their first wish is to go to Ba Dinh Square, to enter Uncle Ho's Mausoleum, to see Uncle Ho with their own eyes. There were many people who couldn't hold back their tears and cried, remembering the beloved Uncle. Perhaps this is the most special thing in Vietnam, rare in any country where the love for the leader is so great!

Being present at Uncle Ho's Mausoleum in the historic September days, Uncle Nguyen Thi Hue (Hanoi) shared: My family and I go to the Mausoleum every year to visit Uncle Ho. This has been going on for many years! In the past two years, due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the family could not fulfill their wish to visit Uncle Ho's Mausoleum. This year, it was very emotional when our family was able to go to Ba Dinh Square again, enter the Mausoleum, and see Uncle Ho's image with our own eyes. As for Ba Dinh Square alone, I think that not only me but also many other people feel extremely proud and appreciated. Because this place seems to have become a "witness" for history, very sacred, bearing the cultural imprint of our nation.
