Japanese cherries were successfully grafted onto bell peach trees, blooming in Lam Dong

At the exhibition area of Giap Thin Spring Flower Festival 2024 in Da Lat flower garden (Lam Dong), for the first time, brilliant white and pink Japanese cherry blossoms appeared.

Tourists enjoy taking photos of cherry trees in Dalat flower garden, originating from Japan.

This type of ornamental plant is about 2m high, blooming dozens of flower clusters, each cluster has 30-40 flowers. In particular, the grafted branch is about 20cm long and has hundreds of flowers arranged in beautiful chains.

Mr. Tran Van Toan, owner of Toan peach garden in Hiep An commune (Duc Trong district, Lam Dong province) said this is one of 20 Japanese cherry trees that were successfully grafted after a decade of testing.

The person who successfully grafted Japanese cherry buds on a bell peach tree in the mountains of Northern Vietnam.

Previously, he chose some types of peaches as host trees to graft Japanese cherry shoots but was unsuccessful. Finally, Mr. Toan used peach tree seeds from the northern mountainous provinces to cultivate a one-year-old host tree, then grafted it with Japanese cherry shoots.

The good news is that Japanese cherry buds are compatible with this host tree, with a survival rate of more than 80%.

Mr. Toan said that in the coming time, he will complete the production process to be able to grow a large number of this type of grafted cherry tree; Meets the unique and novel bonsai needs of flower lovers.

It should be added that many years ago, the Japanese donated famous cherry varieties to grow in the city four times. Da Lat but all were unsuccessful.

As someone who has diligently researched cultivating Japanese cherries (Sakura) in Vietnam for many years, Dr. Tran Le in Biology has drawn the conclusion that Vietnam's rainfall is very large while Sakura is grown in low places. Flat ground causes trees to die from waterlogging.

The Japanese once brought to Vietnam 1-2 year old trees that even had flowers, so Sakura brought with them the conservative behavior of temperate trees, so it is very difficult to grow in tropical countries like ours.

Mr. Tran Le decided to plant the seeds right in Vietnam and planted them on hilly land in the northern mountainous region and then transferred them to decorate the Hoa Son Dien Trang tourist area (Da Lat City). By the beginning of 2018, the famous flower of the land of the rising sun had bloomed pink flowers, spreading its fragrance in Da Lat.

Previously, in November 2015, Mr. Tran Thang, President of the Institute of Vietnamese Culture and Education in New York (USA), brought 6 Japanese Yoshino cherry trees from the US to give to the City. Da Lat for trial planting.

The city assigned Mr. Bui Van Sang, owner of Muoi Loi Peach Valley, to plant 3 trees, while the remaining 3 trees were assigned to another engineer. Mr. Sang has diligently researched and cared for Yoshino to suit the climate and soil conditions of Da Lat.

On this Lunar New Year of Giap Thin 2024, Mr. Sang said that the above mentioned Yoshino trees cannot survive in Da Lat, but Yoshino's buds grafted with Da Lat cherry apricot have adapted to this land and have flowered.

Yoshino from Japan was successfully grafted onto a Da Lat cherry apricot tree.

It is known that Yoshino is one of the most beautiful species among the more than 200 cherry varieties that Tokyo gave to Washington more than 100 years ago. Each flower consists of 5 soft pink-white single petals and a cluster of red stamens with yellow anthers attached to the tip of the stamens, looking very elegant.
