Kien Trung Palace, the working and living place of the last two kings of the Nguyen Dynasty, is being restored with a total cost of more than 123 billion VND.
Kien Trung Palace is located in the Forbidden City and was renovated on February 16, 2019 by the Hue Monuments Conservation Center as the investor.
Along with the relics of Thai Hoa Palace, Can Chanh Palace, Can Thanh Palace, Khon Thai Palace, Kien Trung Palace is one of 5 important works located on the Shinto axis of the Forbidden City under the Nguyen Dynasty.
The palace was built in 1921 and completed in 1923 under the reign of King Khai Dinh.
During the reign of King Bao Dai, the palace became a common place to eat and live for the entire king's family. After the success of the August Revolution, on August 29, 1945, Kien Trung Palace was where King Bao Dai met with the Provisional Government Delegation to officially hold a meeting to discuss abdication, handing over the right to run the country to the Government. Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. However, in 1947, due to the impact of war, the building collapsed completely, leaving only the foundation.
According to the leader of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, Thua Thien Hue province, the project to restore and renovate Kien Trung Palace in the Forbidden City of Hue - which started in February 2019, is entering the decoration phase. The decoration is completed and opened to welcome visitors during the Lunar New Year 2024.
The reconstruction of Kien Trung Palace from a ruin is important in the process of preserving and promoting the value of Hue Monuments Complex - a World Cultural Heritage honored by UNESCO.
Kien Trung Palace was invested in the construction of items such as overall renovation of the foundation wall, railing system, campus yard including Tien Vien and Hau Vien, and steps.
Renovation and restoration of Kien Trung Tower (Kien Trung Lau) 2 floors, height about 14m, construction area about 97m2; surrounding small structures such as brick pedestals, fountains, cannons, and guard houses; technical infrastructure systems, trees; Preserving the foundations of Dong Cung Lau, Ngu Library Room, Vo Ho Gia Phong and Ngu Phe Phong.
The building was restored and renovated with a design similar to the old one. In front of the main hall is a landscape garden. There are 3 staircases decorated with delicate dragon shapes. Visitors can follow the stairs to get to the palace steps.
The main floor is designed with 13 porch doors, 5 doors in the middle space and 3 doors on each side. The upstairs area is also designed similarly to the main floor.
What makes the architecture of Kien Trung Palace unique and different is the combination of Renaissance architecture, French architecture and the architecture of ancient Vietnamese works.
This is an important typical project, marking a unique and special period that complements traditional Hue royal architecture.
