The name "Datanla" of the waterfall is derived from the language of the K'Ho ethnic group: "Dàh-Tam-N'ha", which means "under the leaves there is water". Around this name, there are two legends handed down by the locals.
Located in ward 3, about 7 km south of Da Lat city center, Datanla waterfall is a scenic spot that tourists from afar should not miss the opportunity to visit when they have the opportunity to set foot on Lam Vien plateau.
Due to flowing through many stone shelves with gentle slope, Datanla waterfall is not too noisy but still full of charm. The waterfall always has an abundant amount of water because the upstream is a stable source of water. Around the waterfall is a primeval forest with rich vegetation.
The name "Datanla" of the waterfall is derived from the language of the K'Ho ethnic group: "Dàh-Tam-N'ha", which means "under the leaves there is water". Around this name, there are two legends handed down by locals for hundreds of years.
The first legend says that, at first, people did not know that there was a waterfall here because the sound of the water was very smooth, and from afar, nothing could be seen but trees. One day, they saw fairies flying down that wilderness.
Following the trail of the fairies, those present could not help but be surprised to see that under the luxuriant forest canopy is a beautiful waterfall, where the beauties from the heavens are bathing and frolicking... The name "under the leaves has water" originates here.
The second legend says that, during the time of King Po Rome ruled the Champa kingdom, the Cham from Panduranga (now Phan Rang - Thap Cham, about 100 km from Da Lat) often pulled up to attack the Lach and Chil people in Lam Vien Plateau.
After a fierce battle, the Lach people were pushed back and had to retreat into the jungle. They were tormented by thirst because it was the dry season. In the midst of poverty, Lach people accidentally discovered a torrential waterfall. Having drinking water, the Lach people quickly recovered and launched a counterattack.
Meanwhile, the Cham people are also suffering because of the lack of drinking water for the large army. They had to flee before the overwhelming spirit of the Lach people. After liberating the village, Lach residents named the newly discovered waterfall "under the leaves there is water" to inscribe this historical event.
In addition to the two legends above, Datanla waterfall is also associated with another story of ethnic minorities. Accordingly, Datanla waterfall is where the hero K'Lang and the mountain girl H'Biang met. Here, Lang fought with a herd of wild animals including two stellar cobras, seven wolves and two foxes.
The fighting took place extremely fiercely, causing the wind to rise violently and the trees to fall. Taking advantage of the time when the two snakes stuck their tongues out, Lang took a knife to the forest to cut off the snake's two blades and then shot at the wolves and foxes with 9 arrows, causing them to flee...
The felled forest creates deep holes, one of which is the "Abyss of Death" at the foot of Datanla waterfall. Since then, this legendary waterfall has become the dating place of Lang - Biang lovers.
Today, Datanla waterfall is a tourist attraction that attracts a large number of tourists in Da Lat. Besides admiring the waterfall, visitors from all over the world can also participate in exciting adventure games such as slide, rope climbing.
Exploring Datanla waterfall will be more interesting if you hear about the legends related to this beautiful waterfall...
