The Tam Quy sedge forest is the only honey mussel conservation area in Vietnam and the largest in Southeast Asia.
This is one of nearly 90 nature reserves special-use forests in Vietnam that are strictly protected, and unauthorized people are prohibited from entering the forest without permission from the authorities.
This is one of nearly 90 nature reserves special-use forests in Vietnam that are strictly protected, and unauthorized people are prohibited from entering the forest without permission from the authorities.
According to research, the forest was initially only 350 hectares wide, but has now expanded to nearly 520 hectares with cypress trees scattered on low hills at an altitude of 50-325 m.
Mr. Nguyen Van Chuong, Head of the Tam Quy Saffron Forest Protection Station, said that in the Tam Quy Saffron Forest Reserve, the main honey is a large tree species with the scientific name Madhuca pasquieri belonging to the Sapotaceae family. Sapodilla (Sapotales)
In the world, honey clams are mainly distributed in China, Vietnam and some Southeast Asian countries.
Because it is a special-use forest, precious tree varieties are listed in the Vietnam Red Book, so people entering and leaving Tam Quy forest must strictly comply with legal regulations, strictly prohibiting cutting, burning, etc. Many signs and posts are posted at points where residential roads pass by.
Mr. Trinh Xuan Dac, Tam Quy forest protection officer, does not have detailed tally data on the species of mussels here, but estimates that there are tens of thousands of trees of different sizes.
In particular, there are the largest honey plants in Tam Quy that are nearly 100 years old, about 70 cm in diameter, an adult cannot hug.
According to Mr. Dac, in Vietnam, honey clams grow scatteredly, but are concentrated mainly in the Northeast, North Central and Central Coast regions. However, honey worms in Tam Quy grow in concentrated, almost pure species, in a rare forest, the most unique natural gathering place in Southeast Asia.
Honey wormwood is classified as a multi-purpose plant, its very solid wood is listed in the tetraphyletic group (Dinh, Lim, syria, Tau). Saffron wood is often used in construction. The trunk of the syringa tree has a high heat capacity and is used to forge household and agricultural tools that no other type of charcoal can compare to.
The end of the year is the time when the sapodilla forest produces fruit with a sweet taste like a sapodilla.
People living around the Tam Quy forest can go into the forest to pick up the fruit and press the kernel for cooking oil instead of animal fat when allowed by the ranger.
In addition to sycamore, Tam Quy forest also distributes many other tree species such as green lim, rag, cheo, brooch, chuu or pine... In recent years, the green lim species has grown very strongly, the largest tree has a diameter of up to 1. 2 meters. Therefore, the honeycomb forest has fluctuated from pure forests to mixed species forests.
Currently, the Tam Quy Saffron Forest Management Board is implementing silvicultural impact solutions such as thinning lims, clearing shrub canopy... in the direction of preserving the rare sedge species in this place.
