Along with waterfalls, lakes and forests of hundred-year-old pine trees, Chu Dang Ya volcano is also a most visited place when traveling to the mountain town of Gia Lai.

Located about 30km northeast of Pleiku City center, Chu Dang Ya volcano in Ploi Lagri village, Chu Dang Ya commune, Chu Pah district (Gia Lai) is about 975m above sea level.

According to archaeologists, Chu Dang Ya is a volcanic crater created by lava flows that erupted millions of years ago.

In the language of the J'rai people, Chu Dang Ya means "wild ginger." Legend has it that once there was an old woman who lived at the foot of the mountain. One day, she had a stomach ache and was treated by a local healer, but the illness did not go away. In desperate pain, she struggled to climb the mountain near her home hoping to find something that could help her.

Going to the top of the mountain, she saw a bunch of naturally growing green ginger and thought it was something from Giang (heaven), so she dug it up and ate it. Immediately after that, she felt much better. She took a few more roots and brought them home to eat and her illness completely disappeared.

Her story spread around the area and from then on the Jrai people here called that mountain Chu Dang Ya.

The beauty of Chu Dang Ya has the simplicity of the sunny and windy Central Highlands, although wild and rustic, it is extremely charming.

In 2018, Daily Mail magazine (UK) put Chu Dang Ya volcano on the list of destinations worth visiting, even though this is an inactive volcano and has cooled for millions of years. According to Daily Mail, this is a place that makes tourists who love adventure travel fascinated because of the natural landscape and unique indigenous culture.

In 2020, Chu Dang Ya Volcano reached the top 50 most beautiful landscape photos in the world at the Landscape photo contest organized by Agora.

Chu Dang Ya volcano has been inactive for millions of years. Up to now, the remaining traces of lava have turned this land into extremely fertile land. Indigenous people have taken advantage of the soil's fertility to grow many types of agricultural products such as arrowroot, corn, and squash. This farming activity also gives Chu Dang Ya a very impressive beauty.
