Constructed in 1926 by French Resident Paul Giran as the Residence Hall, it was later renamed Bao Dai Residence when King Bao Dai returned to Vietnam in 1947 and stayed here. From 1955 to 1975, it witnessed pivotal events during the resistance against French and American colonial rule. In 1976, it was transformed into the Dak Lak Museum.

After over 30 years of operation, the museum underwent extensive renovations funded by Dak Lak Province, reopening in 2011. Notably, it's Vietnam's first museum to exhibit in four languages: Vietnamese, French, English, and Ede. This multilingual approach attracts numerous visitors annually.

Designed in the traditional longhouse architecture of the Ede ethnic group in the Central Highlands, the museum blends modern materials like concrete, glass, and alloys, with contrasting colors such as white, black, and brown, creating an elegant yet classical ambiance that captivates from afar. Spanning 130m in length and 65m in width on a 9,200-square-meter plot, the open-space museum offers a comfortable and pleasant experience for leisurely walks and exploration.

Since 1977, Dak Lak Museum has amassed over 10,000 artifacts, including more than 1,000 unique and precious items meticulously selected and displayed across three main areas: Biodiversity, Ethnic Cultures, and History.

Biodiversity Area

Covering approximately 350 square meters, this section showcases over 200 artifacts and compelling displays, immersing visitors in the rich ecological diversity of the majestic Central Highlands forests. Highlights include rare woods (such as ironwood, agarwood, and flat-leaved pine), traditional medicinal herbs, industrial crops, minerals, and endangered species listed in the Red Book, alongside stunning landscapes.

Moreover, visitors can admire exquisite handicrafts crafted from natural forest products and savor enticing Central Highlands specialties available for purchase as souvenirs.

Ethnic Cultures Area

Transitioning from the central to the left wing of the museum, visitors step into a cultural haven of simplicity and warmth, representing indigenous ethnic groups in the S-shaped land strip, notably the Ede, Mnong, and Giarai peoples.

Additionally, Dak Lak Museum provides well-defined thematic areas supplemented with detailed captions, images, and films to ensure effective information dissemination.

History Area

Located on the museum's right wing, the History Area spans 700 square meters and showcases over 400 artifacts, photographs, documents, and short films, providing a panoramic view of Dak Lak's glorious history from the Stone Age to the present day.

Noteworthy exhibits include Dong Son bronze drums, fossilized shells, gongs, ancient pottery, artifacts from Buon Ma Thuot during the 1930-1945 campaign, revolutionary weapons from 1945-1975, battle maps from the Ho Chi Minh Campaign, and memorabilia such as telephones, typewriters, saws, and stamps used by commanders, along with border milestones between Vietnam and Cambodia since 1975.

Accompanied by authentic footage of bloody campaigns during the national liberation struggle, the History Area evokes profound emotions and eternal gratitude among visitors living in times of peace.
