Located in the city of Hue, this pagoda is not only a spiritual haven but also a symbol of Vietnamese culture and history. Thien Mu Pagoda, often referred to as the Pagoda of the Celestial Lady, sits elegantly on Ha Khe Hill, overlooking the serene Perfume River.
Its iconic seven-story Phuoc Duyen Tower is a marvel that captures the eye of every visitor. This tower, built in 1844, stands as a testament to the architectural prowess and artistic sensibilities of the Nguyen Dynasty.
The pagoda was originally constructed in 1601 under the order of Lord Nguyen Hoang, the first Nguyen Lord of southern Vietnam. Legend has it that the site was chosen based on a prophecy. A local elder woman, believed to be a celestial being, appeared and foretold that a pagoda should be built here to bring prosperity to the land. Thus, the name Thien Mu, which means "Celestial Lady," was born.

As you walk through the lush gardens of the pagoda, you'll encounter various statues and structures, each with its own historical significance. One of the most poignant artifacts is the Austin car, which carried the Venerable Thich Quang Duc to his self-immolation in Saigon in 1963. This act was a powerful protest against the persecution of Buddhists, and the car now serves as a somber reminder of his sacrifice.
The Dai Hung Shrine, the main sanctuary of Thien Mu Pagoda, houses a magnificent statue of Buddha and intricate carvings that depict the life of the Enlightened One. The peaceful ambiance of the shrine invites visitors to pause and reflect, offering a moment of tranquility away from the bustle of everyday life.
Adjacent to the shrine is the bell tower, home to Dai Hong Chung, a two-ton bell cast in 1710. The bell's deep, resonant chimes can be heard across the river, calling the faithful to prayer and meditation. This bell, along with the stone stele bearing inscriptions from the early 18th century, showcases the rich heritage preserved within the pagoda's grounds.

The tranquil setting of Thien Mu Pagoda is further enhanced by its picturesque surroundings. The Perfume River flows gently by, adding to the serene atmosphere. Many visitors opt for a boat ride along the river to appreciate the pagoda's beauty from a different perspective. The sight of Thien Mu Pagoda, with its towering presence and lush gardens, is a sight to behold, especially at sunset.
Thien Mu Pagoda is not just a place of worship; it is a cultural treasure that tells the story of Vietnam's spiritual and historical journey. The pagoda remains an active religious site, where monks can be seen performing daily rituals and maintaining the temple grounds. Visitors are welcome to participate in these activities or simply observe, gaining a deeper understanding of Buddhist practices and beliefs.
