On this trip to Cao Bang, I decided to explore Nui Mat Than, also known as Nui Thung. Located in Ban Danh village, Quoc Toan commune, Tra Linh district, this destination is famed for its pristine beauty and unique geological features.

I started from the center of Cao Bang city, traveling by motorbike along National Highway 3, passing Ma Phuc Pass and following Provincial Road 205 towards Tra Linh. The road, although narrow in parts, offers stunning scenery. Upon reaching Ban Danh village, I continued on foot for about 1.5 km along a trail to reach Nui Mat Than.
The ideal time to explore Nui Mat Than is in September and October, when the water in Thang Hen Lake recedes, revealing Nam Tra Waterfall and picturesque landscapes. This period attracts many visitors who come to enjoy the enchanting beauty of the area.
Upon reaching Nui Mat Than, I was struck by the majestic scenery. The limestone mountains are covered with lush vegetation, creating a vibrant natural picture. At the foot of the mountain, green meadows stretch out, occasionally dotted with grazing buffaloes, creating a peaceful scene.
The most striking feature of Nui Mat Than is the round hole on the top of the mountain, with a diameter of about 50m. This is the result of long-term geological processes, creating a unique and magnificent image. Nui Mat Than, combined with Thang Hen Lake, forms a stunning natural picture with limestone mountains and dozens of large and small lakes.
I decided to camp near Thang Hen Lake. With its open space and beautiful scenery, this is an ideal place to host barbecues and enjoy music with friends. Enjoying the fresh air and admiring nature during the camping trip was an unforgettable experience.

Setting up camp near Thang Hen Lake was an adventure in itself. The tranquil waters of the lake, reflecting the surrounding limestone peaks, provided a serene backdrop for our activities. As the sun began to set, the sky transformed into a canvas of warm hues, making the scenery even more breathtaking.
We gathered around a campfire, cooking delicious barbecue and sharing stories under the starry sky. The sound of the lake gently lapping against the shore combined with the distant calls of nocturnal animals created a perfect symphony of nature. This camping experience not only brought us closer to nature but also strengthened our bond as friends.
The next morning, we woke up early to explore the surrounding areas. A short hike took us to higher vantage points, offering panoramic views of the entire valley. The mist rising from the lake in the early morning light added a mystical quality to the landscape.
We also visited the Nam Tra Waterfall, which was revealed due to the receding water levels of Thang Hen Lake. The waterfall, cascading down from the limestone cliffs, was a sight to behold. The cool, refreshing water provided a perfect spot to relax and take in the natural beauty of the area.
