The Go Dong Da Festival, also known as the Victory Festival, honors the heroic victories led by King Quang Trung against foreign invaders. This festival is marked by traditional ceremonies, vibrant decorations, and the rousing sounds of drums and gongs, bringing to life the nation's glorious history.

1. History of Go Dong Da Festival

Go Dong Da, a historical site in Tay Son Street, Hanoi, witnessed a crucial battle over 200 years ago during the nation's fight against the Qing invaders. When the Qing dynasty invaded, Nguyen Hue ascended the throne as Emperor Quang Trung and led the Tay Son army to reclaim independence. On the 4th and 5th days of the Lunar New Year, Emperor Quang Trung led his troops to attack the enemy in Khuong Thuong, resulting in a decisive victory. The site stands as a proud symbol of the nation’s triumph and the invaders’ defeat.

To honor the king and the Tay Son army’s efforts, the people organized the Victory Festival to celebrate this historic achievement.

2. Significance of Go Dong Da Festival

The Go Dong Da Festival commemorates the great victory at the Battle of Ngoc Hoi–Dong Da. This event not only remembers King Quang Trung's contributions but also celebrates the resilient spirit of the Vietnamese people. Held annually, the festival teaches future generations about the strategic military tactics of the Tay Son army and the enduring patriotic spirit of our ancestors.

This battle is a symbol of the nation's bravery and is an immortal epic, celebrated every year as part of the cultural journey in Hanoi

3. The Ceremonial Part

The Ceremony of Offering and Parading the King Quang Trung, Queen Ngoc Han

On the morning of the 5th day of the Lunar New Year, village elders gather for the grand ceremony. The procession begins at Khuong Thuong Temple and proceeds to Dong Da, featuring flags, parasols, and palanquins, creating a grand spectacle. The Tiết Mao flag leads the way, symbolizing divine authority, with the parade ending with the image of the Fire Dragon.

The Incense Offering and Speech

Upon arrival at Go Dong Da, there is a ceremony to offer incense and deliver speeches commemorating the victory of the Year of the Rooster. Local government leaders often participate, recounting the heroic achievements of Emperor Quang Trung and inspiring national pride.

The Requiem Ceremony

In the afternoon, a requiem ceremony is held at Boc Pagoda and Dong Quang Pagoda. Boc Pagoda hosts the requiem for Tay Son soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the battle. At Dong Quang Pagoda, a requiem for the Qing soldiers, known as the "charity porridge offering," reflects the compassion of the Vietnamese people, even towards former enemies.

4. The Festival Part

The festival part of Go Dong Da is held at Dong Da Cultural Park, featuring a grand opening drum performance and a dragon dance, creating a lively and festive atmosphere.

The reenactment of King Quang Trung’s nation-building and defense efforts is a highlight, with actors recreating the defeat of invaders. This performance celebrates traditional culture and martial spirit, adding excitement to the new year.

The homeland of King Quang Trung, Binh Dinh, is known for its martial arts. The festival includes thrilling martial arts contests, with both men and women participating, cheered on by the crowd, adding to the festival’s vibrant atmosphere.
