The Vam Lang Whale Worship Festival in Tien Giang province is a vibrant celebration deeply rooted in local culture, honoring the whale deity for protection and prosperity

The Vam Lang Whale Worship Festival has long been a hallmark of cultural richness for the people of Tien Giang province in Vietnam. Rooted deeply in reverence for the whale deity, locals seek blessings of prosperity and safety from this revered figure. The festival shares similarities with other whale worship ceremonies across Vietnam but is distinctly characterized by the cultural and religious beliefs of the Tien Giang community.

Legend has it that during the reign of Emperor Gia Long (later known as Nguyen Anh), while escaping the Tay Son rebels at Soai Rap estuary, a fierce storm threatened to sink their boats. Desperate, the sailors prayed fervently for divine intervention. Miraculously, a giant whale appeared, guiding their boat safely to the peaceful shores of Vam Lang. In gratitude, Nguyen Anh bestowed upon the whale the honorary title "Grand Admiral of the Southern Sea" and ordered shrines to be erected along coastal regions, including the Kieng Phuoc Shrine, later designated as the Second Grand Admiral of the Southern Sea in 1852.

Every year, on the 9th and 10th day of the third lunar month, the people of Tien Giang gather in anticipation for the Vam Lang Whale Worship Festival. This grand event takes place in Vam Lang commune, Go Cong Dong district, Tien Giang province.

The festival is divided into two essential parts: the Ritual and the Festival.

Rituals of the Vam Lang Whale Worship Festival

The festival commences with the colorful procession of the deity's image on the morning of the 9th day of the third lunar month at the Kieng Phuoc Shrine in Vam Lang. Over 50 participants, accompanied by traditional music, solemnly escort the deity's image to the shrine. The rhythmic beats of drums and clangs of cymbals fill the air, echoing ancient customs and traditions.

At the Nam Hai Whale Shrine (located in Lăng 1, Vam Lang town), further ceremonies ensue, including ancestral offerings, prayers for bountiful catches, and rituals honoring the spirits of the sea. Visitors can rent motorcycles in Tien Giang to follow these processions if they wish to join in the traditional customs.

Following the morning rituals, the highlight of the festival is the water procession, the most solemn and majestic part of the Vam Lang Whale Worship Festival. Here, fishermen offer precious items to the whale deity, expressing gratitude for safe voyages and abundant harvests. As night falls, participants engage in spirited rituals, dancing, music performances, and traditional games, creating an atmosphere of joy and community spirit.

Festival Activities

The festival continues with vibrant festivities over two days, featuring traditional folk games and sports competitions such as tug-of-war, slow bicycle races, football, volleyball, swimming, folk singing, boat racing, greased pole climbing, duck catching, and stick pushing. Surrounding the festivities are enthusiastic cheers and encouragement from locals, enhancing the festive spirit.
